Cute Classroom Decor
Why does it matter?
Some teachers LOVE decorating their classrooms whilst others see it as a waste of time and money. And there is no right or wrong way to go about setting up your classroom. Some of it will come down to personal preference, as well as budget and time restraints.
At the start of my teaching career, I honestly felt like I didn’t have the time or the money to spend on decorating my classroom. It was taking all of my energy to keep up with the constant cycle of planning and marking. And if that’s you, that’s totally okay!
But a few years into my teaching career, I began to see the importance of creating a warm and welcoming classroom environment. Firstly, I felt like I deserved my classroom to be beautiful since I was spending so much of my time there! But I also saw the value of a cute classroom for my students. My classroom was like an escape for some of students and they deserved a beautiful calm space.
Improving my organization also helped my lessons run more smoothly and my room was less over stimulating for some children.

Top tips when choosing decor
1. Don’t spend too much money
I know how tempting it is to spend sooo much money over the summer on decor for your classroom! Trust me, I have been there! But it is absolutely not necessary. You can create a cute classroom on a budget!
Keep your eye out for things in the sale and collect your cute classroom decor pieces over time. It took me years to get to a place where I felt happy with my classroom.
You should also consider asking your school if there is a budget for you to spend on classroom decor (some of you may have more luck than others with this!) But it’s always worth an ask.
2. Buy second hand
You’ll be amazed what you can find at second hand stores! And it’s much cheaper than buying new, as well as being better for the planet. Facebook market is a treasure trove of amazing furniture that you can DIY and use in your classroom. Or find a cheap mirror to turn into an amazing affirmation station.
3. Buy timeless pieces
When you do buy classroom decor, try to buy things that you can reuse year after year. For example, I bought a set of cushions and a rug for my reading corner which I used for years because they could go in the washing machine.
Try to avoid trends which may go out of fashion quickly. Or one of my teacher besties used to let her class decide on the theme for their room each year – so cute, right?! Well it was a nice idea until she had to keep rebuying decor to match her space theme classroom. under the ocean classroom and so on because she couldn’t reuse it!
4. Use what you already have
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel and re-buy what you already have. If you follow tip 3, you will be able to keep reusing what you do buy year after year. Don’t feel the need to follow all the TikTok trends which we all know don’t last long.
5. Teach your children to respect it
There is nothing worse than spending your own hard-earned money on something for the classroom just for your students to break it. It’s seriously soul-destroying! So make sure you teach your students the importance of respecting their classroom environment. And if they can’t manage this, take the decor away.
6. Store it properly
Properly storing your classroom decor is so important, especially seasonal stuff! Otherwise things can get damaged and have to be thrown away. I like to organize things into bins so I can easily grab what I need when it gets to Christmas, for example.
