This post is all about creating the perfect math classroom display.
Best Math Classroom Display:
Every classroom needs to have a math classroom display. When used well, they are a great additional resource for your students to use. And all the best maths display will have certain key elements.
Firstly, you want it to be related to the topic you are currently teaching! I know it sounds simple but I know how easy it can be to forget to change over your math display. Before you know it, you’re half way through your unit on fractions but the math working wall still shows multiplication…trust me, I’ve been there!
To help with this, you can have some parts of your math display that stay the same throughout the whole year. You don’t have to completely switch it out each time. This means that it isn’t such a big job to switch out the things that are relevant for your current topic.
I like to split my math display in half. One half stays the same all year round and the other half is topic-specific. I have found it works really well for me and it has been super useful for my kiddos.
Let’s take a look at some of the things your math classroom display should ALWAYS have:
1. Lettering or title
Every good display or bulletin board needs a good title, right?! I like to have an overall title that stays the same all year round. For this, I choose some bulletin board lettering that matches my classroom theme. For a huge range of lettering options, you can check out my Etsy shop here.
Then, I also like to have a title card with the specific focus we are learning in maths at the time. This helps remind my children what we are learning about that week.
2. Learning objectives
Showing your students what they are working towards is also really important. Students need to know what their targets are and what they should be able to achieve by the end of the unit. Some teachers have a display for learning objectives across the curriculum. But I like to have this up on my math display too.
Showing the journey that your students will go on in their maths unit is a really cute idea!
3. Mathematical vocabulary
No matter what topic I am teaching in maths, there is certain key vocabulary that I keep on my math display all year round. For me, this is vocabulary around the four operations – synonyms for each operation. This is because I find it useful in nearly every topic I teach and because widening my kiddos vocabulary is essential for them to understand test questions.
I have really cute synonym flowers on my math classroom display. The operation is in the centre and then there is a synonym on each petal. But it could be as simple as creating an anchor chart that stays up all year round, like this:
As well as math vocabulary that you have up all year round, there will also be some topic-specific vocabulary that you want to display each unit. I like to cover my math display in plastic so that I can just write this up directly. Honestly, it saves SOOOO much time in the long run! Or you can make an anchor chart and save it for next year.
4. Sentence stems
Getting your children discussing their ideas is super important in math lessons. It helps them solidify their understanding and justify their thinking. I find that my kiddos sometimes need a bit of help with this. This is why I think having sentence stems as part of your math classroom display is super important. It helps them with their conversations and keeps them on topic.

5. Key knowledge and tricky concepts
As well as key math vocabulary, you should display key knowledge on your maths display too. This obviously needs to be relevant to your grade, or something that your class is finding tricky. For example, my class kept confusing which was the greater than and less than sign so this is now a permanent feature on our classroom math display.
Time is another concept my students always seem to find tricky. So I like to always have a clock with time labels on near my maths display. This really helps them learn to tell the time with an analogue clock:
There will also be some topic-specific key knowledge that you need your students to know. For example, when teaching measures you need your students to know how many cm are in a m. I like to create an anchor chart that I can reuse each year with this topic-related key information on.
6. Number line
Having a solid understanding of number and place value doesn’t come easily to all children. That is why having a number line is a really important part of your math classroom display. I like to put it going across the top of my bulletin board but my partner teacher has hers hanging from a washing line which also looks super cute.
Obviously, depending on the grade level you teach, your number lines will all look different! Some will also need to include negative numbers, of course. But you get the idea!
If you’re looking to add a number line to your maths working wall, you can check out my cute neutral number line in my Etsy shop.
7. Place value
Having a good understanding of place value is one of the most important concepts in math. That is why it is a good idea to have place value posters up that are relevant for your age group. This is something you can keep up all year because it will help support those students who find this concept tricky.
8. Times tables
Times tables is another thing that is soooo important your students are fluent in. Again, depending on the grade you teach, this will look different for everyone.
Having times table posters up in your classroom will help your students with quick recall of their multiplication facts. Skip counting posters are also great for this.
9. Days at school poster
Having a days at school poster on your classroom math display is a fun way to make it interactive. Choose a student each day to add a tally or add one to the number. It is a great way of reinforcing number facts and the kids in my class love it! They are always reminding me at the end of the day that we haven’t done it, ha!
I have loved using this safari themed one this year – you can grab it from my TPT store!
10. Classroom calendar
A classroom calendar is another great addition to your math classroom display. It helps your kiddos learn the days and months of the year, as well as how many days are in each month. Plus, it is a useful reminder of important dates you have coming up!
You can check out my classroom calendar here.
11. Amazing work
Having somewhere to display some amazing work is another cute thing to add to your classroom math display. This could be a piece of school work or homework! Your kiddos will love to see their work up on display! Attach a clip board to your bulletin board to make it easy to switch the work out.
12. Puzzle or early finisher activity
If you always have kids that seem to fly through the work, then this is a great one for you! I like to have a wallet with challenge cards in attached to my bulletin board. This way, the kids can just grab one when they are done!
Also, how great is this idea…try adding a math boggle board! Children have to use the number given to try and reach the target number! This is a great one for critical thinking and practising the 4 operations!
